Location: Pacifica, CA, USA

Near the Golden Gate there are many sites which still host war bunkers from the World War II era, in varying states of decay.  This pipe was protruding from one, located along a stretch of coast known as Devil’s Slide just south of San Francisco.  To get to this particular spot, you have to illegally park along Highway 1 and scale a steep trail to reach the bunker, all the while being careful not to lose footing for fear you will freefall 500 feet off a cliff to the ocean below (now think about trying that with 40 pounds of camera gear on your back).  I captured this image, whose title I had chosen even before I set my tripod up, with a beautiful winter sky and glassy ocean to frame it.  When I got back to my car the sheriff had already issued me a parking ticket – which I considered a small price to pay for a winner of a shot.
