I’m always looking for something new along the coast to take pictures of, having already photographed most of the usual junk that usually washes up. This find took me by surprise. At first even I didn’t know what it was – a doll’s head with a mohawk? Turns out it was a tennis ball that had seen more than a few days at sea, and was looking a little worse for wear and tear (to quote a favorite Stone’s song). This time I tried to get the 4x5’s wide-angle lens as close to my subject as possible, using the front tilt to bring the adjacent shore as close into focus as possible. In my head I imagined a tennis serve gone awry and flying off the court into the sea.
