Location: San Francisco, CA, USA
At the western end of the City lies a lonely stretch of rocky shore called Land’s End, nestled between the Golden Gate and Ocean Beach. To reach the shore often requires determination, as well as a certain amount of disregard for Park Service signage (often telling you how many people have died after crossing their barriers in the past few years). Down below the cliffs lies a favorite site of mine, which I have revisited on many occasions. A building that I first captured in 1995 mostly intact (see landsend) had succumbed to the force of the sea, breaking apart into myriad pieces. I found this particular piece scattered amongst the boulders. On one side it looked much like the rocks around it, but on the other it revealed a patternwork of bathroom tiles still clinging to the cement. Setting it atop a nearby rock, I opened the shutter for a long exposure and hit the foreground with an off-camera flash.
