intercolumniation

Location: Madeira, Portugal

Yes, I had to look this word up: the definition of the title is “the space between two columns.”  I found these decoritive plaster objects beneath Madeiran cliffs, no doubt discarded by a builder too lazy to properly dispose of the remnants of a remodel.  They had survived the fall from the cliff, but only barely, and were afterwards subjected to pounding waves from the North Atlantic winter.  But in these decaying objects I saw a beauty of form, perhaps made more interesting by the journey they endured and the scars they incurred.  And after all, it is what exists in the space between these columns that will last a lot longer than the columns themselves.
