springs eternal

Location: Salton Sea, CA, USA

The Salton Sea was for many years one of my favorite places to capture on film (see Sea of Mirrors to view more images).  Along the shores of this massive salt lake lie an assortment of abandoned desert resorts and development schemes gone bust – all victims of the lake’s whimsical and unpredictable nature mixed, of course, with the ever-meddling hand of mankind.  I found these bed springs in a rusting heap of human detritis near the southwestern shore, carefully extracted them from the pile, and placed them in shallow water just off the sandy beach.  I captured the image just after sunset, with an orange sky reflecting off the water.  The title, once again, chose itself.
